Obama’s Economic Stimulus Program

I am interested in your opinion of the Stimulus Package that Obama forced our representatives to pass and which will be signed into law on Monday.

We already know that Banks and other rich corporations got free money. How about you? Will you be getting any of the Stimulus money? How do you feel about the stimulus? Should it have been approved?

I think that the Stimulus package is absolutely ridiculous. We are borrowing even more money from other countries and we are not going to be able to pay back the interest. We're leaving future America even worse off than we are right now. Think about that, Barack. No wonder China already owns California. They're taking it in payment. This president has no idea what he's doing. He thought that American's liberated Auschwitz. Sorry, Mr. President, it was, in fact, the Soviets.

The stimulus package is bad for our economy in the long term, according to CBO. But it will have some short term benefit. Problem is that letting the government have 30% of the economy leads to bigger government, higher taxes (* even though he promised a net tax cut *), and makes people like me not want to work as hard to get ahead. Some people really do need help, but long term government spending never has worked in the past, or the Japanese Govt would have worked. I refuse to drink the Obama koolaide, and would be far better off with a lot less government, and a lot more freedon and responsibility.

So this is how democracy dies, to the cheering of thousands.

I think all the 'hype' around this guy is ridiculous. I'm tired of seeing his face EVERYWHERE like some sort of celebrity – he has done NOTHING to warrant such 'slobbering over' and in fact has only broken promises (already) and shoved 'his spending bill' down our throats w/o even allowing anyone the time to read it. Stimulus?? Umm, not. Governments way of taking over more of our lives?…Yep. I'm tired of working to pay for the lazy-ass people in this country. Some people legitimately need some help (and that's fine) but all he's doing is making it so the lazy people have no reason to work and those of us who do don't feel it's worth it anymore.

The congress got the package at 11pm.. had to vote the next day at 2pm. This was done because it was so important that it be done RIGHT NOW!! with NO DELAY!! Then the president waited 3 days to sign it!

Obama's stimulus plan will significantly slow down the American economy for years to come (not to mention any future "stimulus" plans!!) The plan will not stimulate anything except government expansion and socialism. It is a waste of money we don't have and will result in higher taxes. The guy is completely Clueless, to put it nicely. I can't stand him or his idea that government spending will bring our economy back. He is ignorant and completely unqualified!!!!! Apparently, history is not to be studied for solutions to our current problems. God forbid someone actually learn from mistakes and successes. Something as simple as common sense could help resolve so many issues, especially economic ones. Unfortunately, Obama has none, and neither do the idiots who didn't see the lies and voted for him!!

I've been waiting for a time like this..for people to face forclosure on their homes that they shouldn't have bought to begin with. This was my time to jump in and buy something. You see, I knew. If you recall we were enjoying one of the best economic eras in American history in 06 before the Dems took over congress. I firmly believe they intentionally created this catastropy in order to aid them in taking over the White House.
I'm in the construction industry na d the executive order signed by Obama about a week ago that requires all contracts with any govt. money attached to it must be done by union labor pretty much assures me that the "spendulus" package will not help me, my family or my company in the least.

We either borrow more (thought we were already in huge debt?), or we print more (yay for inflation!) So, now the value of the dollar drops, prices for goods and services go up, people lose their jobs because employers cant afford to pay them, and the economy gets worse.

Hooray for Obama and his trillions of dollars of debt not even 2 months into office. And how exactly are we going to cut the deficit in half by multiplying it? Did Obama even take a math class? Or does he even have a decent advisor that has actually paid taxes and knows how to add/subtract? Obama is KILLING small businesses. This whole thing of taxing people who "make" over 250k a year? Yeah, it looks like a lot ON PAPER, but when you're a small business owner, most of what you make goes back into your business. If you're taxed more and more, you can't afford to pay people to work for you and you have to lay people off. Simple economics, but obviously Obama's better at running for office rather than holding office and doing his job. This country got caught up in the excitement of someone young and hip for president, not realizing that there is a benefit to age and unpopularism – experience and getting things done (and not paying lip service just to get elected).

That is true Clinton actually forced banks to make irresponsible loans, and to sell homes that consumers could not afford, that's a great point. And the housing crisis is a huge contributor to this recession though not the only. I am referring mostly to Wall Street, oil companies, and bank regulations. Keynesian economics have already been tried and it failed. F.D.R. tried it in his "New Deal" and in economic terms it was a failure. WWII is what really stimulated the economy…it created jobs, lots of them. Too much of this stimulus money isn't being put in the right places. It may have done some good, but only if used properly. i.e. infrastructure, roads, helping small business, helping people invest, etc. – not taxing them more to invest.

Actually, the problem was not created by wall street. It was created at the local banks. I am not sure but I don't think wachovia even has a building on wallstreet, or Washington Mutual. Lehman brothers folded directly because of side effects of fanny mae and bad lending habits, which were masked because of complicated tools where the mortgages were sold and sold and broken up and sold again. The regulations contrary to popular belief should be on our "Actual Banks" not the investment banks. Canada actually has a sound banking system because their banks are required to hold onto their mortgages and do not sell them. That's probably the only law we need to stop this next time. After all if you put all your money in one pot (fanny mae) then what happens if that pot gets a leak. every investor knows that you spread out your money you don't keep it in one place.

I happen to agree with you I think this policy is going to be a failure, as an american I hope it works and I am wrong. But as a person with my own beliefs and reasoning I can't see how it can help at all.

My wife and I are right below the line of what he says is rich and I can't even afford a bmw or audi. I am not sure what this says about my spending habits but I live in the north east and in order to even buy a house you have to make around 70,000 or you can't get a mortgage high enough to afford a home and it will be a pretty small and simply to put it just not that nice. The limit for the mortgage deduction he wants is 160,000 I think. That will put you at a slightly above average home in most areas of the northeast especially in areas like new york where you could get paid that much.

The numbers just simply don't make sense.

Mike, sorry, I should have been more clear. I was responding to "Read's" comment that, "…everybody, including obama, has recognized that we have been living beyond our means." That statement was absurd since he has promoted such ludicrous amounts of pork spending so quickly on programs that will not generate the number of new jobs we need. Much of his spending won't even hit the economy for another two years.
Mike, we are also just under the 250,000 line, but I can already see how badly Im going to be affected by this admins. policies and new taxing system. Im not going to invest as much as I would have because they just raised the capital gains tax to 20%. They are also doing away with charitable donation write-offs, which is going to really hurt non-profit organizations. In addition, who is it going to affect when you raise taxes on the upper 1-2%? Ultimately it's going to affect us all by trickling down. The rich are the ones who control most of the flow of goods and services. And, let's not forget to mention social security. They're raising the cap on that. I believe it was set at 98,000 last year. So that affects me even though I'm not making 250,000. I feel bad for all the true hard-working Americans out there who at one time worked hard in hopes of advancing themselves and their families. I say prepare for the worst and hope for the best from here on out.

Some of the spending in the bill should have been done through separate legislation, not pushed through a bill that is supposed to help stimulate the economy. If you look at the news these days, their are so many scandals about bank owners and CEO's embezzling money, and spending it on useless self promotions. The real key to reviving the economy is creating jobs and projects in the U.S. Also researching on new resource alternatives, and not relying on foreign oil. All of the U.S's money is being sent out into other nations instead of it being properly invested into the nation itself, especially through oil expenditure. What Obama is doing is lengthening the economic situation and making things suffer even more. If its bad now, the future hold more grievances due to this economic stimulus plan. We need a president just like Lee Kuan Yew of Singapore. If you guys have read about him, he has transformed Singapore into an economic powerhouse and an Asian Tiger. I disagree. The vast majority of the economists Obama is listening to agree to his policy. Obama doesn't represent just the economists, he represents the public at large and they have majority agreement that this sort of spending is not good. Kate is correct in her statement that the rich know how to advoid taxes. I am a financial planner and the majority of my clients are high net worth individuals. I set up Deferred Comp plans and HR-10 plans to reduce thier taxable income. If they need to replace any lost income then I go out and purchase NON AMT Muni bonds. The important lesson here is that taxing the rich is a slippery slope. When the government does not get the tax intake they had estimated then they will move down the income threshold to fill the lost revenue. One of my best personal investments made two years ago was the purchase of 14 AR-15's, 6 AK-47's and 9 H&K 91. I just sold 2 AK's and 1 H&K for over a 200% profit I sold them to purchase more ammo (ammo has increase dramatically over the last 6 month's) 10,000 more rounds being delivered next week.

The stimulus package does not "suck" and it will help everyone in different ways. Millions of jobs will be saved that were considered for cutting thanks for the package. Recipients of Government monies such as welfare, food stamps, Section 8, subsidized housing, etc, etc, need to be be routinely tested for narcotics, alcohol and tobacco use. Six years ago I wrote a book called Uncle Sam's Plantation. I wrote the book to tell my own story of what I saw living inside the welfare state and my own transformation out of it.

I said in that book that indeed there are two Americas — a poor America on socialism and a wealthy America on capitalism.

I talked about government programs like Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Job Opportunities and Basic Skills Training (JOBS), Emergency Assistance to Needy Families with Children (EANF), Section 8 Housing, and Food Stamps.

A vast sea of perhaps well-intentioned government programs, all initially set into motion in the 1960s, that were going to lift the nation's poor out of poverty.

A benevolent Uncle Sam welcomed mostly poor black Americans onto the government plantation. Those who accepted the invitation switched mindsets from "How do I take care of myself?" to "What do I have to do to stay on the plantation?"

Instead of solving economic problems, government welfare socialism created monstrous moral and spiritual problems — the kind of problems that are inevitable when individuals turn responsibility for their lives over to others.

The legacy of American socialism is our blighted inner cities, dysfunctional inner city schools, and broken black families.

Through God's grace, I found my way out. It was then that I understood what freedom meant and how great this country is.

I had the privilege of working on welfare reform in 1996, passed by a Republican Congress and signed 50 percent.

I thought we were on the road to moving socialism out of our poor black communities and replacing it with wealth-producing American capitalism.

But, incredibly, we are going in the opposite direction..

Instead of poor America on socialism becoming more like rich American on capitalism, rich America on capitalism is becoming like poor America on socialism.

Uncle Sam has welcomed our banks onto the plantation and they have said, "Thank you, Suh."

Now, instead of thinking about what creative things need to be done to serve customers, they are thinking about what they have to tell Massah in order to get their cash.

There is some kind of irony that this is all happening under our first black president on the 200th anniversary of the birthday of Abraham Lincoln.

Worse, socialism seems to be the element of our new young president. And maybe even more troubling, our corporate executives seem happy to move onto the plantation.

In an op-ed on the opinion page of the Washington Post, Mr. Obama is clear that the goal of his trillion dollar spending plan is much more than short term economic stimulus.

"This plan is more than a prescription for short-term spending — it's a strategy for America 's long-term growth and opportunity in areas such as renewable energy, healthcare, and education."

Perhaps more incredibly, Obama seems to think that government taking over an economy is a new idea. Or that massive growth in government can take place "with unprecedented transparency and accountability."

Yes, sir, we heard it from Jimmy Carter when he created the Department of Energy, the Synfuels Corporation, and the Department of Education.

Or how about the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 — The War on Poverty — which President Johnson said "…does not merely expand old programs or improve what is already being done. It charts a new course. It strikes at the causes, not just the consequences of poverty."

Trillions of dollars later, black poverty is the same. But black families are not, with triple the incidence of single-parent homes and out-of-wedlock births.

It's not complicated. Americans can accept Barack Obama's invitation to move onto the plantation. Or they can choose personal responsibility and freedom.

Republicans have spent 8 years creating this financial crisis. How nice to hear them screaming about it now. Conservative monetary policies have sent the US economy over the cliff. It's high time to try a new approach. Saving America's banks and getting credit flowing again are the first steps. This inc;ludes $5.8 million for the planning and design of a building to house a new Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the Senate. The funding may also help support an endowment for the institute.

The bill also includes $22 million to expand facilities at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library & Museum and $5 million more for a new gateway to the Boston Harbor Islands on the Rose Kennedy Greenway, a park system in downtown Boston named after Kennedy's mother and built on land opened up by the Big Dig highway project.

Patrick wants to fix the deficit not by allowing casinos in Massachusetts, but by increasing the gas tax 19 cents to give Mass the highest gas tax in the nation. Of course if that doesn't pass, he'll find a way to raise the income tax and/or sales tax. He claims the 19 cents is conservative. It'll be real conservative when we're paying $4 bucks a gallon again. Once these Libs pass a new tax it doesn't get repealed either.

Never ends with these fruitcakes. The only way to get a tax break today is to put a freakin solar panel on your roof, only to have to remove AND re-install the panels every 10 years to have it re-shingled. just some food for thought for those who have $75,000 just lying around, and can afford the time off while people work inside your house for a week.

Actually,when Bush got out of office, at that point it was highly "fixable". Unemployment was at about 6.5%, and only one stimulus had been passed.
