Well, I love my DVR, It allowed me to continually stop the speech and explain to my children the problems with his speech. No tax cuts to 90 some million people with low income. Well, let’s see, if you pay $1000 in taxes and at the end of the year you get back $4000 in earned income credit like a lot of people, does a tax cut mean you would get less? Ok, then I had to explain the problem with his “no tax cuts on the middle class” issue. With all of his promises ie. health care, higher pay for teachers, credits for bio cars, then that means only the rich will be taxed. But they would have to pay for so much, that would bring them back down to middle class, then since he said no tax cuts on the middle class they would get there money back. So who is going to pay for this mess.

Jill, these laws trying to be passed to force employers to give women equal pay as men for the same jobs are ridiculous. The stipulations would raise too much confusion and there would be numerous frivolous lawsuits that would tie up the already choked court system. If a person is good at their job they will get the pay they deserve, regardless of gender. If a person feels they are being cheated and discriminated against by their employer then they can build a case and sue for that, but having such a ludicrous law on the books would do more damage than good.

And yes, McCain has indeed voted to support Bush 95% of the time most recently (as in, last year alone), but less so in earlier years (as low as 67%). And Obama has voted pretty close to 100% in line with fellow Democrats during his brief Senate career. Republicans tend to vote the same as do democrats, but most democrats seem to do so blindly without cause. So what is your point?

And if Obama is such a good speaker/reader how come he stutters often and says more “Ummms” and “Uhhs” than speech?

It seems you take the easy route in having people provide YOU with reasons as to why Obama isn’t the man for the job. Using FACTS, please provide us with reasons as to why he IS the man for the job.

Personally, I don’t approve with his plan for Iraq. Pulling out in a given timeframe will leave the region unstable and ripe for reform to a terrorist state. I also don’t approve of cutting spending on our military. I think it was Reagan that said something along the lines of weakness is too tempting for aggressors.

Mostly everthing else is similar to what McCain has to offer.

Oh…and by the way…proper procedures suggest you hold your hand over your heart during the Pledge of Allegience. Not the National Anthem. Some people do and that’s fine, but removing your hat and standing is the proper manner in which to attend the anthem. It comes down to “pieces of flair” and “expressing yourself.”

I did read all of Jills posts. After reading yours, I went back and read them again. The only thing that even resembles a “fact” is the voting statement. Also, you may notice this is a pro-McCain website. That being the case, I believe the burden of proof is on Obama supporters to persuade us…not the other way around. I would appreciate it, however, if those “facts” where more than just pro-Obama website clips that she chooses to parrot. Let me also say that supporting the president 95% of the time is nothing of which to be ashamed. I believe I would be more ashamed if he were a naysayer, voting against the surge in Iraq and creating division throughout the country by repeatingly reporting to the media it would result in a horrible loss. Remember…”Divided we fall.” Here’s a fact: Obama did just that.

By the way, if you honestly feel the war is “Bush’s fault,” please review the vote for the Iraqi war, congress, having seen the same intelligence President Bush saw, voted to pass the declaration. President Bush doesn’t research WMD intelligence, he receives it from analysts…just like congress does.

Moreso, he has yet to admit he was wrong. Look, I know some people on this thread are bigots, racists and perhaps just plain ignorant. I don’t believe Obamas skin color prevents him from doing anything well. I do, however, believe that I would like to see some more integrity. “I was wrong” would be a good start. Refusing to address it at all reminds me too much of Clinton…refusing to tell the truth on a bad call until he was cornered like a rat (in multiple cases). Economics 101

- The purpose of business is to make a profit. If there is no profit, there is no business.
- If there is no business, there are no jobs. –
- In order for a business to preserve itself in the face of increased costs, including minimum wage, and taxation (amongst others), it must raise prices, inflation.
- In the face of inflation, the government raises minimum wage and taxes.
- The dog will never catch it’s tail.

Senator Barack Obama has unveiled his economic plan of raising taxes on the successful. His plan would boost the top marginal rate to well over 55 percent—before the inclusion of state and local taxes—resulting in many individuals seeing their marginal tax rate double. The consequences of this policy would be a return to the bad old days of tax avoidance, with taxpayers disguising personal income as business income or capital gains and the migration of capital from the United States to abroad.

Among the more prominent elements of his tax proposal, Senator Obama would end the Bush tax cuts and allow the top two tax rates to return to 36 and 39.6 percent. He also would allow personal exemptions and deductions to be phased out for those with income over $250,000. The real kicker, though, is that Senator Obama would end the Social Security payroll tax cap for those over $250,000 in earnings. (The cap is currently set at $102,000.) These individuals will then face a tax rate of 15.65 percent from payroll taxes and the top income tax rate of 39.6 percent for a combined top rate of over 56 percent on each additional dollar earned.

High-income individuals will be forced to pay even more if they live in cities or states with high taxes such as New York City, California, or Maryland. These unlucky people would pay over two-thirds of each new dollar in earnings to the federal government.

How the Obama Tax Plan Compares to Other Countries

Senator Obama’s new tax rate would give the United States one of the highest tax rates among developed countries. Currently only six of the top 30 industrial nations have a tax rate for all levels of government combined of over 55 percent. Under this tax plan, the United States would join this group and have a higher top rate than such high-tax nations as Sweden and Denmark. The top marginal rate would exceed 60 percent with the inclusion of state and local taxes, which means that only Hungary would exceed Senator Obama’s new proposed top tax rate.

The costs in economic terms of such high taxes are real. For example, of the six countries with higher tax rates than 55 percent, the average unemployment rate is 7.35 percent (see chart). This figure includes Denmark, which appears to have a very low unemployment rate of 3.9 percent. However, Denmark spends over 5 percent of its GDP on unemployment programs and benefits, thereby increasing its unemployment rate.[1]

A Return to the Bad Old Days

Historically, Senator Obama’s tax rate would be the highest individual tax rate since the Jimmy Carter days. Tax shelters and tax avoidance strategies were common when the top marginal rate was 70 percent or higher. This new top tax rate will again encourage these gimmicks, reducing investment and economic growth as resources are squandered in an attempt to avoid punitive taxation.

Many individuals will attempt to transfer their compensation from wages to capital gains, since capital gains would only be taxed at 25 percent, or less than half of the top rate on wages. This would put a great deal of pressure on a company to do anything it could to make its stock quickly increase in value. Other individuals would try to incorporate so they could pay business taxes instead of having to pay taxes on their wages. Again, these resources would be diverted away from more productive uses and slow the economy.

High tax rates also encourage capital and income flight to lower-taxed areas. There is ample evidence in the United States of individuals and businesses moving to states such as Florida or Delaware to take advantage of their tax-friendly laws. A higher federal tax rate would encourage individuals to move assets abroad to take advantage of lower tax rates in countries such as Canada, France, and Great Britain.

These high tax rates could also have a large impact on the labor force. Many workers could choose to reduce their hours or simply retire in the face of such high taxation. Economists usually argue a great deal about what effect minor changes in the tax code will have on incentives to work. However, the Obama plan calls for a tax increase so large that economists will be focusing on the harm to the overall economy rather than just the isolated effects on labor and on capital. (ie: higher unemployment)

A Finite Source of Revenue

Perhaps a larger worry than the damage to the economy is the long-run budget problem of the United States. While Senator Obama raises taxes a great deal on upper income individuals, the overall tax plan increases the national deficit. As a result, the country will be even less prepared to pay for current and future Social Security and Medicare obligations. When money is needed to pay for those programs, it will be hard to tax the rich even more, given that the top rate will already be so high. Instead, in order to pay the government’s spending and entitlement shortfalls, taxes would fall most heavily on middle-income Americans. After all, even successful taxpayers are not an infinite source of revenue.

If you think things are bad now….. Vote Obama. It WILL get worse.

I think Republicans are hypocrites also, I honestly have little faith in either candidates, but if I HAD to choose between McCain and Obama, I would choose McCain because his ideology is closer to mine, though all politicians are liars and that’s a fact. You cannot expect them to be honest about everything, or to keep their promises. And I make my conclusions based on observations from my everyday life and from research I do, and the analysis I do of my research. And a clarification I never implied that Obama was associated with terrorists, I said he leans towards socialist principals and ideals, which are nearly impossible to implement, because in any society, a hierarchical system is formed out of the inherent nature of humankind. There is a define hierarchy system in the U.S right now, it is distinctly divided into categories of low, middle, and high class, as is with any society in existence today. I don’t believe half the arguments which politicians present, and their personal life stories are just gimmicks to get the public to “feel” for them. And by pointing me out to watch a video by the daily show, that’s another fragment of the liberal media, which is extremely biased. I go to a very liberal university, most of all my professors are democrats, I live in a very liberal part of the country, so based from my social interactions on a daily basis, people would assume I would have the same ideals, but honestly I’ve learned to think on my own! and make my own conclusions, and no matter what anyone tells me, or how many newspaper articles I read, the facts are clear. History repeats itself, look at every president and ruler of every society ever existing in the history of the world, where any of them one hundred percent honest or perfect? of course not.
